How do children learn how to read?
Learning to read is a step-by-step process. The first step is phonics. Your child should master each step before moving on to the next step until they reach reading comprehension.
Reading Development Process
STEP 1
Phonics
Module 1 of our toolkit takes a child through the sounds of letters (phonics) and builds vocabulary of sight words. Then, they will learn to read short words. By the end of Module 1, children will be able to know how to sound out all the letters in the alphabet, and read words and short sentences.
Module 1 and the Decodable books are suitable for children in their early years who are beginning their reading journey.

STEP 2
Fluency
Fluency is the ability to read accurately and smoothly with intonation. Module 2 of our toolkit contains passages for children to practice reading fluently as they learn to become independent readers. By the end of Module 2, learners will be able to read simple stories fluently.
Module 2 is suitable for primary school children who can read basic words, and want to build up confidence to read independently and enjoy reading.
STEP 3
Comprehension
With comprehension, children will enjoy reading, make connections between a text and their own lives, and learn from what they read.
Module 3 of our toolkit consists of 15 storybooks that follow the stories of five friends as they learn more about the world around them.

Support your child's reading journey from Pre-K to Primary School
After accomplishing the Literacy Toolkit, children will be able to read and understand longer and more complex stories. This is suitable for primary school children who are beginning to explore the wonderful world of books.
How To Use the MYReaders Toolkit
A step-by-step guide on how to use our full Literacy Toolkit is available on our YouTube channel through the following links. Parents and teachers may watch our reading mentors model how to guide emerging readers through each of the modules and do the same with their children.
-
PHONICS
In this guide to our Phonics module, our reading mentor models introducing new letter sounds, sight words, and supporting a child to practise reading simple sentences. We also demonstrate ways to build phonemic awareness through associating letter sounds with everyday things around the house.
-
BLENDING
In this video guide, we demonstrate blending letter sounds together to decode simple CVC (Consonant-Vowel-Consonant) words.
-
DECODABLE
Watch this video along with your child and follow along as we model reading aloud using our decodable books. Guide your child to practise listening and reading along with the video, or reading on their own!
-
FLUENCY
Now that they have learned the letter sounds, blending and decoding, it is time for your child to practise their reading fluency. Watch our reading mentor demonstrate how to support beginning readers to practise reading fluently.
-
COMPREHENSION
A good reader actively thinks and makes connections as they read a story. This video demonstrates the types of interaction you may have with your child before, while, and after reading one of our storybooks to support their reading comprehension.

We also develop customised modules according to the needs of schools to grow the reading skills of their students.
